Structural Engineer - Residential & Small Commercial Projects

You will own the structural design and calculations yourself, taking each project from the architectural drawings through to issued construction drawings and working with the lead structural engineer through regular check-ins. We are looking for 4-6+ years of professional structural design experience on residential or small commercial buildings. The role is fully remote with a core overlap with U.S. Eastern Time. About this role

This is a full-time remote role embedded within a U.S.-based structural engineering practice. You will report to and work closely with a lead structural engineer as a true technical extension of that engineer across the full project lifecycle, from architectural drawings through final construction documents. This is not a drafting-only or junior role. You will move fluidly between engineering and documentation, coordinate with the lead engineer through regular check-ins, manage multiple project tasks at the same time, and deliver accurate results within project deadlines. The right person is independent, detail-oriented and versatile, practical and focused on buildable solutions, responsive and communicative about progress and questions, adaptable across project types, collaborative when incorporating engineering feedback, and able to become productive quickly with minimal onboarding. The hiring process is an initial screening, a technical assessment of about four hours, an F5 interview and a client interview.

What you’ll do

  • Perform structural design and engineering calculations for beams, columns, walls, floor and roof systems and foundations, including wood-framed structural design
  • Carry out gravity and lateral load analysis, including shear walls, moment frames, connections, and wind and snow load design for U.S. East Coast projects
  • Interpret architectural drawings and develop structural solutions independently
  • Produce complete structural construction drawing sets: plans, sections, schedules and details
  • Own the full project lifecycle from architectural drawings through final construction documents without extensive supervision
  • Coordinate with the lead structural engineer through regular check-ins and incorporate engineering feedback
  • Manage multiple project tasks at the same time and deliver accurate results within project deadlines

What we’re looking for

  • 4-6+ years of professional structural engineering experience
  • Undergraduate degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering or a closely related discipline
  • Able to independently own the full project lifecycle from architectural drawings through final construction documents without extensive supervision
  • Structural design and engineering calculations for beams, columns, walls, floor and roof systems, foundations and wood-framed structures
  • Gravity and lateral load analysis: shear walls, moment frames, connections, and wind and snow load design in a U.S. East Coast context
  • Revit (structural drafting and BIM) and AutoCAD
  • RISA-3D or equivalent structural analysis software
  • ForteWeb, HandCalc, MathCAD and/or Microsoft Excel for calculations
  • Proficiency with U.S. Imperial units (feet, inches, pounds)
  • Ability to interpret architectural drawings and develop structural solutions independently
  • Experience on residential and/or small commercial building projects
  • Experience producing complete structural construction drawing sets (plans, sections, schedules, details)
  • Strong written and verbal English communication
  • Ability to work independently in a fully remote environment

Nice to have

  • U.S. structural engineering project experience
  • U.S. East Coast project experience and knowledge of the associated wind and snow loading
  • Familiarity with U.S. building codes and structural design standards
  • Steel structure design experience
  • Reinforced concrete structure design experience
  • Experience coordinating structural design directly with architects
  • Experience in a consulting structural engineering environment
  • Professional Engineering (PE) licensure or progress toward licensure
