Senior Site Work & Underground Utilities Estimator

RemoteFull-TimeWorking hours to be confirmed during hiring

This is a hands-on site work and underground utilities estimating role, not a civil design role and not a building estimator role. You will read U.S. civil drawings yourself and produce the quantities: excavation, cut and fill, trenching, bedding and backfill, and water, sanitary sewer and stormwater systems. We are looking for 3 to 5 years of estimating focused on site work and underground utilities. General civil design experience on its own is not enough, and neither is building, structural or BOQ-only quantity surveying. Shortlisted candidates complete a practical estimating exercise on real site work drawings.

Remote, full-time site work and underground utilities estimator based in India: read U.S. civil construction drawings and produce accurate quantity takeoffs for excavation, earthwork, water, sanitary sewer and stormwater systems on commercial site development projects.

About this role

This is a full-time, long-term, dedicated remote role based in India, supporting commercial site work and underground utility estimating for a U.S.-based construction company. You will report to company management and the estimating lead. You will interpret civil construction drawings, perform detailed material quantity takeoffs, and calculate quantities for excavation, earthwork and underground utility systems, including water distribution, sanitary sewer and stormwater drainage. The role starts with accurate material takeoffs and progressively expands to complete project estimates covering materials, labor and equipment costs in support of competitive bid preparation. Day to day you will review civil site plans, grading plans, utility profiles and technical specifications; calculate cut-and-fill volumes, trench dimensions, pipe lengths and the associated bedding and backfill quantities; coordinate quantities across plan views, profiles and details to avoid omissions; and prepare clear, organized Excel-based quantity sheets. You will identify scope gaps, conflicting dimensions and missing information and raise them proactively with the estimating team and management. The ideal candidate understands how site work and underground utility projects are physically built, not only how they appear on drawings, works independently, manages priorities and meets deadlines. Shortlisted candidates complete a practical estimating exercise using representative site work and underground utility drawings.

What you’ll do

  • Interpret civil construction drawings: site plans, grading plans, utility plans and profiles, sections and details
  • Perform detailed material quantity takeoffs for commercial site development and civil infrastructure projects
  • Calculate excavation, trenching, backfill and earthwork quantities, including cut-and-fill volumes
  • Quantify underground water supply systems: pipe, fittings, valves and hydrants
  • Quantify sanitary sewer systems: piping, manholes and laterals
  • Quantify stormwater drainage systems: catch basins, inlets, piping and detention or retention basins
  • Calculate trench dimensions, pipe lengths and the associated bedding and backfill quantities
  • Coordinate quantities across plan views, profiles and details to avoid omissions
  • Prepare clear, organized Excel-based quantity sheets
  • Identify scope gaps, conflicting dimensions and missing information, and raise them proactively with the estimating team and management
  • Grow over time from material takeoffs to complete project estimates covering materials, labor and equipment

What we’re looking for

  • 3 to 5 years of hands-on construction estimating experience with a substantial focus on site work and underground utility projects (commercial site development or civil infrastructure)
  • Material quantity takeoffs for commercial site development or civil infrastructure
  • Excavation, trenching, backfill and earthwork quantity calculations, including cut-and-fill volumes
  • Estimating underground water, sanitary sewer and stormwater drainage systems
  • Independent interpretation of civil construction drawings (site plans, grading plans, utility profiles, sections and details) without quantities provided by others
  • Microsoft Excel for quantity calculations and estimating spreadsheets
  • Strong mathematical and analytical skills
  • Attention to detail and systematic quantity checking

Nice to have

  • Experience estimating U.S. commercial construction and site development projects
  • Familiarity with U.S. civil construction drawings, utility specifications and standard estimating practices
  • Experience estimating stormwater detention or retention basins
  • Construction estimating software or digital takeoff and on-screen measurement tools
  • Obtaining and reviewing supplier quotations and subcontractor pricing
  • Developing labor and equipment cost estimates in addition to material takeoffs
  • Familiarity with trench excavation, utility bedding, pipe installation and soil volume calculations
